Brace and Bolt Grants

CEA is committed to making California communities safer, more resilient and able to recover following a damaging earthquake.

If your insured owns an older house (built before 1980), we encourage them to strengthen it to make it more resistant to earthquakes. This process is called a seismic retrofit.

A seismic retrofit involves bracing or bolting and bracing the house to its foundation in compliance with California Existing Building Code Chapter A3.

For properly retrofitted qualifying homes, CEA offers a premium discount of up to 25%.

CEA offers two brace + bolt programs to help fund a seismic retrofit.

CEA Brace + Bolt (CEA BB)

CEA recently expanded policyholder eligibility for the CEA BB program. This program offers grants of up to $3,000 to help CEA policyholders pay for a seismic retrofit.

To qualify for CEA BB, the insured must have:

  • Been invited by letter to participate in the CEA BB program,
  • A valid CEA earthquake insurance policy on the qualifying house, and
  • The qualifying house be a pre-1980 house with pre-1980 construction with a raised or "other" foundation in determining the CEA policy premium.

I was truly amazed to find how easy it was to deal with the CEA Brace & Bolt program. Between the packet of information they sent me, as well as the ease of use of their website, everything was way easier to navigate than I had anticipated."I was truly amazed to find how easy it was to deal with the CEA Brace & Bolt program. Between the packet of information they sent me, as well as the ease of use of their website, everything was way easier to navigate than I had anticipated. But not only that, everyone on their staff was exceedingly courteous, knowledgeable and efficient. Bottom line, with their support and guidance, I got my house bolted quickly, received the $3,000 reimbursement they offered (which was actually paid directly to the contractor), and was able to receive a 15% discount on my earthquake insurance policy. And the best part is my house is finally bolted, something I've been putting off for years. This program provided the trigger I needed to get it done. I'm definitely a happy customer."

Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB)

Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB)

Earthquake Brace + Bolt: Funds to Strengthen Your Foundation is an incentive program that offers grants of up to $3,000 to qualified homeowners with eligible houses in a select number of higher-earthquake-risk ZIP Codes.

The applicant does not need to be a CEA policyholder to be eligible for this grant.

ZIP Codes chosen for program participation are ordered by the following two criteria:

  1. Earthquake Hazard: Hazard was identified using the United States Geological Survey (USGS) earthquake hazard map for California.
  2. Earthquake Vulnerability: Vulnerability was represented by identifying the percentage of pre-1940 houses in ZIP Codes in California (US Census Data). Older houses are more likely to require earthquake bracing and bolting.

Over time we hope to get to all high hazard areas in the state with additional funding from a variety of sources.

The EBB program is currently closed. Visit the homepage and sign up to stay current on EBB news, including where and when the program will open next.
