April is Earthquake Preparedness Month!

For preparedness month, here’s a quick refresher on earthquake risk:

  • It’s not a matter of if, but when, the next earthquake will strike.
  • Most Californians live within 30 miles of an active fault.
  • Thousands of known faults crisscross California. Since scientists are still discovering new faults and will never discover them all, no home is safe from a potentially damaging quake.
  • Some of the world’s most devastating earthquakes have occurred on previously unknown faults.
  • Scientists say there’s more than a 99% change of a magnitude-6.7 quake striking California in the next 30 years.
  • Yet, according to a UCLA School of Public Health and Survey Research Center report in 2010, "relatively few [California] households have acted to mitigate losses and reduce injuries" from earthquakes.

CEA is committed to earthquake preparedness. We hope it is a commitment you share in your role as a valuable source of information to your clients and your community. Whether it is creating a disaster plan, residential retrofitting, or purchasing earthquake insurance, we want to help you educate your clients on the importance of getting prepared for the next damaging earthquake.

Get Prepared, California! AuctionSM

To address the earthquake preparedness gap, the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) and the American Red Cross joined forces to help more people prepare to survive and recover from California's next damaging earthquake. The Get Prepared, California! AuctionSM is sponsored by CEA and managed by iHeartMedia, and raises awareness of the importance of earthquake preparedness in California. All proceeds of the auction help support 32 chapters of the American Red Cross in communities throughout California.

The auction—now in its sixth year—runs from April 1st – April 30th, and offers many once-in-a-lifetime items for bidding, including:

  • Several Dodgers packages.
  • A ride on the Goodyear Blimp.

Question: What is the first step in earthquake preparedness?

  • Drop, cover, and hold on
  • Secure your space
  • Make a plan to be safe
  • Organize disaster supplies

Answer: Secure your space! The first step to earthquake safety is to make sure your space is properly secured, using items like furniture straps, and identifying any hazards.

Make sure your clients know the risk, and that they are financially protected from earthquake damage with a separate earthquake insurance policy.
